Norbreck Hotel--Blackpool

Good hotel, bathroom and bedroom roomy enough to turn a wheelchair around, as was the lift, just a pity that it kept
breaking down and the promise that it would be repaired in a couple of hours turned out to be about 7 hours.
Breakfast was very good but the evening meals lacked imagination and was often on the cool side.
Evening entertainment was good as of course the entertainment in the town its self, the only other downside was that
it was quite a way from the town and with 5 wheelchairs it made problems.

First group from Burton Phab Club 14th to 16th May, the name of the river boat is the Gloucestershire Dart and it is
over 65 feet long and 12 feet wide, the facilities were surprisingly good, but it was not easy to turn
a wheelchair around in either the toilet or shower-room.

17 of us went to the cottages which are situated about 7 miles from Cardigan and 31 miles south of Aberystwyth and 1 and a
half miles from the sea. During our stay we visited a butterfly place, waterfalls, a castle, the NATIONAL CORACLE CENTER,
a small railway, but a word of warning if you like us have wheelchair users, although we had a discount it was not worth the
time and trouble as our ride took less than 25 minutes, and all we saw were trees. We alo visited many seaside places
and deserted beaches, but I must stress that a car or other transport is essential if you have wheelchair users.
The cottages themselves were very good and more than adequate for wheelchair users, and as a bonus there is a games room
were we went in the evenings and played bingo, cards and dominoes.

Our Boat trip started on Tuesday 28th May from Upton-on-Severn. There were 7 of us, this included Mandy, Tom, Gwen,
Margaret, Ruby, Simon and Keith. We travelled down in the minibus with loads of bags because we couldn't take cases.
We boarded the boat called the Gloucestershire Dart. The Skipper's name was Dave and his helper was Neil. We got all our
stuff sorted and then Margaret and Gwen made a cup of tea. It was so peaceful going down the river, watching the ducks
and swans. We went through locks and moored for the night in Gloucester Docks. After have a walk round to get groceries
we went to Burger King to have tea. That evening the two skippers went to the pub and the rest of us stayed on board.
Tom decided to clean the windows outside of the boat before playing a game of Scrabble with Mandy, Ruby and Keith.
Margaret and Gwen sat reading, whilst Simon just sat quietly.
The following day after breakfast on board catered by Gwen,
Margaret and Mandy we headed towards Tewkesbury. During the day people went to seat outside on deck or sit under the
covered bit at the end. Mandy sat on the seat with her legs up reading and feeding the ducks. It was so relaxing for
us all. Tom and Keith had a go at steering the boat. That night we moored at Tewkesbury and ate tea in the Fish and
Chips Shop, which was a short walk to the boat. Then once back at the boat most of us sat on deck to enjoy the evening sun.
On the last day we went along the river Avon for a while and this is when Mandy tried steering the boat and crashed into
the trees. Neil and Dave came to the rescue. Then it was back to the bus to come home. Before we left Dave and Neil
Tom decided to mop the floor throughout the boat and on deck, when he broke the mop. But never mind.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, so much they want to book for next year.

Higher Cadham Farm

I've just come back from Devon having stayed on Higher Cadham Farm, Jacobstowe, Okehampton.
I could not praise it more highly! A group of us booked the whole farm for a week of relaxation. There are 2 newly
created rooms for wheelchair users, one with an adjoining "carer's room" with a door between, and the standard is very high.
The en-suite is accessible with everything within reach, there are grab rails where needed and a roll-in shower, they even
provide a shower stool. I used a double room (just for me!) and there was LOADS of room, even though there is a lot of
furniture - other than the bed and side cabinets there is a table with dining type chair (great for studying) a dressing
table and stool, a VERY comfy easy chair, and plenty of lights - either fixed or lamps - everywhere. The main reasons for
suggesting a visit though must be the food (incredible - the sweet trolley has to be seen to be believed - and you are
encouraged to have at least 2 helpings) and the welcome - nothing was too much trouble - but no fuss.
I thoroughly recommend it to you

although the lake district resort was advertised to be wheelchair friendly and specially adapted accommodation i wood have to say be careful.if you havent a power chair you wood need to hire one of their scooters.an expense you could do without at the start of your holiday.the village itself i found to be wheelchair freindly except you could not get into the over 18s bar. so if you dont like a lot of noise you havent really got the option to sit in a quiet bar.But please be careful when booking the specialy adapted lodges as they are very old an we found that the adaptions were jus added on so it was more like a make do these lodges were NOT made especialy for disabled but added on afterwoods.(ie...3 inch ply wood ramps nailed onto door steps. not very safe and not really suitable for heavy power chairs).

advertised as disabled friendly with adapted caravans.my carer an i had to leave after 3 days cos it is not a disabled friendly park at all. even tho they say it is. i fort to get a ful refund an luckily i did simply because the park manager explained to me that they are told by head office to put a ramp on any caravan in the park that they like just so they can advertise being disabled friendly. i think the manager then realised that he had said to much and had to give me my money back.

Our holiday began on the monday evening. Ruby picked us all up about 5pm and we set off for Upton-upon-Severn, where we were to join our boat. When we arrived, we were introduced to Dave who was to be our skipper for the week. We all went on board and chose where we prefered to sleep.
It had started raining during the journey down and by now it was bucketing it down. Nevertheless, Ruby braved the elements and with Dave went and fetched us all fish and chips for our tea.
The next morning (tuesday) it was still raining. After breakfast we walked into Upton before setting off for Tewkesbury. By the time we got there the showers had stopped so we all went into town. Some of us went shopping with others going to see the abbey, unfortunately there was a sacred service taking place so we were unable to go inside. We had a cup of coffee in the refectory cafe instead then browsed the shops as we made our way back to the boat.
In the evening we all went for dinner at a nearby pub then returned to the boat had more drinks and a couple of games of bingo.
In the morning (wednesday) we set off for Eckington which was to be our next stop for the night. We walked into the village in the evening for dinner at the local pub. Iain took one look at the menu, decided it was rather expensive and then went into one of his fits (it wasn't that dear Iain!!) Anyway he was alright and we all enjoyed lovely meals.
After breakfast on the thursday morning, we set off for Pershore where we had visitors. Gwyn Richards, an old friend of Rubys and Sue Bellingham from Phab and her husband. We had all been for a walk round Pershore in the afternoon then some went swimmimg at the local leisure centre which was quite close to where the boat was moored.
Then in the evening we all went to the Millars Arms for a meal where Gwyn and his wife joined us.
Friday morning we set off for Evesham which was to be our last port of call. Some went a walk round the town in the afternoon then in the evening we had a meal and a drink in a pub across the road.
The following day (saturday) was our last and we chose to stay in Evesham. The weather was now beautiful and in the afternoon we noticed a wedding party had come onto the grassed area between us and the road, from the hotel opposite. We watched as they had photos taken then the photographer came down to the boat and asked the skipper if they could take some photos on the boat. Dave duly obliged and the bride and groom and two small children, a bridesmaid and a pageboy, jumped on to the deck and had photos taken.
We had also seen a vintage vehicle parade pass by as we had been watching the wedding party.
Well, it was a lovely end to a lovely week.
We had seen some beautiful scenery and wildlife while sailing the river, including three herons and also a large dragonfly which came on board and ended up in Iain and Hazels quarters. Poor thing was frantically trying to find its way out of the window. It did do in the end!
Everyone took a turn at steering the boat, especially Iain who hogged the wheel so much he had to be upgraded to "vice-captain".
Hazel, Keith and Mark had eagerly helped out at the many locks we had passed through.
Rubys two grandaughters (who had joined us to make up the numbers) nine year old cousins Shannon and Sophie were delightful and kept us entertained and the local ducks and swans very well fed!
Mark, very sportingly went along with a little game they were playing and ended up with a make-over.
With make-up on his face, nail varnish on his nails(black and pink!!!) and a bandana on his head you could have mistook him for Boy George!
The skipper had been very helpful, nothing was too much trouble for him.
All in all it was a superb holiday. The only problem was....IT WASN'T LONG ENOUGH!!
