TOUR OPERATOR--SELF -- March 2003
Submitted March 2003 Client -Ronald Wintsch - Geneva Switzerland
Just come back from a couple of days in Rome. Tried to get some info from the Tourist Office about
going on the tours with a wheelchair but after numerous telephone calls could only establish that
the City Tours could not take wheel chairs due to too many steps and the fact that the old Romans,
while notable road builders, chose a large cobbled surface which is very unfriendly for wheelchairs
(so forget the Forum). Trying to get round the central sights of Rome is tough even when being pushed.
Surfaces of roads are mainly cobbles and pavements too chaotic. On the positive side Italian drivers
are very careful and thoughtful (one stopped to commiserate when one of my artificial legs dropped
off from the constant vibrations from the cobbles!) The Vatican museum and the Sistine Chapel are
accessible by wheel chair and are well worth a visit. Pity Rome is such a wonderful city and I would
love to return in better circumstances but how?.
I'M AN ANGLO LIVING IN GENEVA SWITZERLAND. IN ROME WE STAYED IN A 3 STAR HOTEL CALLED PETRUIS -
NOT WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY UNLESS, LIKE MYSELF, YOU CAN WALK A BIT. THE WHEEL CHAIR COULD NOT ACCESS THE
BATHROOM. ALSO THERE IS NO LIFT ALBEIT WE HAD A GROUND FLOOR ROOM.
MOREOVER, WHILST IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE NEAR THE TREVI FOUNTAIN IT IS IN FACT ON A HILL ABOUT QUARTER
OF A MILE AWAY DOWN A COBBLED STREET. ON THE POSITIVE SIDE THERE WERE SEVERAL NICE RESTAURANTS WITHIN 300 YARDS.
